How do I compress an STL file?+

Will compression affect 3D printing quality?+
No. The triangle geometry is preserved exactly — Light and Balanced presets never delete faces. The compressed file slices to an identical print; only the file size shrinks.
Why are STL files so large?+
STL has no concept of shared vertices or compression: every triangle lists its own three vertex positions and normal as raw numbers. The same part stored in a modern binary format is routinely 10–20× smaller.
What format do I get after compressing STL?+
