Kept

Mesh, skeleton, animation clips, materials and embeddable textures — everything the rig needs

Lost

Only FBX-specific extras with no glTF equivalent (some custom constraint setups; blend shapes map partially)

Use for

Publishing rigged characters and animated props to web viewers, AR and engine import pipelines

Using the GLB file afterwards

Load in three.js or model-viewer with animations ready to trigger, import to Unity/Unreal via glTF packages, or attach to an AR quick-look flow

This is the classic animation-pipeline exit: a rigged, animated FBX from Maya or 3ds Max becomes a single browser-ready GLB with the skeleton and clips intact. Textures that arrived embedded in the FBX are inlined; the heavy Autodesk packaging is replaced by a compact file any web runtime, engine importer or AR viewer accepts directly.

What changes in the file

  • 1

Externally referenced FBX textures (paths pointing at the artist's drive) cannot be found at conversion time — export with embedded media first

  • 2

Very long animation timelines convert fine but grow the file; trim unused takes before converting when you can

  • 3

Morph/blend-shape targets survive for most character rigs, but verify facial setups in the preview before shipping
