About the OBJ format

OBJ outlived every format of its generation because it refuses to die: a plain-text list of vertices and faces that virtually every 3D program written in the last thirty years can parse. There is no scene graph worth the name, no animation, no PBR — just geometry, UVs and whatever the companion .mtl file manages to describe. That ceiling is exactly why it survives: when an unknown toolchain has to exchange a static mesh, OBJ is the format nobody has to think about.
