Kept

The captured surface in full detail, including per-vertex colors when the source scan has them

Lost

Nothing native to scanning; PLY never had materials, rigs or animation to begin with

Handling real-world capture output — scanner and photogrammetry meshes on their way into DCC or print workflows

About the PLY format

PLY is the format of things that were measured, not modelled. Scanners, photogrammetry solvers and depth cameras write it, because it stores what those devices actually produce: a dense shell of triangles, frequently with a color value pinned to every vertex. There is no hierarchy, no materials in the PBR sense, no animation — just the captured surface, preserved with metric fidelity. That makes PLY the archival format of the scanning world and the starting point for every cleanup, decimation and retopology pass that follows.

Skip the search — generate a PLY model with AI

If you don't have a {target} file yet, 3D AI builds one from a text prompt or a reference photo and exports it ready for your pipeline. Free daily quota, no credit card.

Where {fromName} files come from

  • Structured-light and LiDAR scanners, which default to PLY for color-per-vertex capture

  • Photogrammetry solvers that bake camera-derived color directly onto the reconstructed mesh

  • Medical and research 3D imaging pipelines that archive surface scans in PLY for measurement

Where {fromName} files go next

  • Cleanup and retopo: MeshLab and Blender import PLY directly for decimation and remeshing passes

  • Web preview of a scan: PLY→GLB turns vertex colors into a shareable, embeddable model

  • Physical reproduction: PLY→STL feeds scanners' output straight to a slicer
