Where do STL files fit in a modern, texture-heavy pipeline?

At the very end. Teams model, texture and review in rich formats, then export STL only when a physical part is needed. Working in STL earlier means throwing away exactly the data that made the digital model useful — convert down to STL as the final step, never the first.

Can a plain STL become a colored web or game asset?

Not by conversion alone — there is no color data to carry over. The route is STL to GLB or OBJ first, then UV-unwrapping and texturing in a DCC tool. The converter gives you a clean mesh to work from; the paint job happens after.

Why does my STL come out the wrong size in the slicer?

STL files carry no units — just numbers. A model authored in centimetres and read as millimetres arrives ten times too small. Most slicers let you set an import unit or scale the object; converting STL to GLB here also bakes a sensible metric scale into the file.

Should I repair a mesh before or after converting it out of STL?

Before printing, definitely — slicers reject or mis-slice leaky shells. The advantage of STL is that repair tools work directly on it, so the usual order is: fix holes and wall thickness in an STL-native repair tool, then convert elsewhere if you need color or animation.

Do CAD-born and sculpt-born STL files behave differently?

The format is identical, but the meshes are not: CAD exports tend to be clean, uniform and watertight, while sculpt exports can carry self-intersections and thin walls that only show up at slicing time. Treat sculpt-sourced STL as a repair candidate regardless of where it is headed.
