Kept

The triangle mesh at full resolution, positioned and scaled as authored

Lost

Textures, all material data, skeleton and animation — STL stores geometry alone

Use for

Taking browser-native or AI-generated assets to FDM and resin printers

Using the STL file afterwards

Drop the file into Cura, PrusaSlicer or Bambu Studio; check scale (STL carries no units) and repair any holes before slicing

Sending a GLB to the printer means reducing it to its shell: STL keeps the triangle surface and discards everything the slicer cannot use. All the web-era polish — PBR materials, baked textures, the rig — stays behind in the source file, and what lands on the print bed is pure geometry, watertight or not.

What changes in the file

  • 1

No units: a model authored in metres may import as millimetres — confirm size in the slicer before printing

  • 2

Colors do not carry over; if the print needs color, that is a post-processing or multi-material job, not a conversion setting

  • 3

Scanned or AI-generated meshes are often not watertight — run a repair pass if the slicer complains
