Can a scan go to print in one step?

Technically this conversion is that one step, but practice adds two: hole-closing (scans almost always leak) and scale confirmation (real-world units survive, but slicers mislabel them often enough to warrant a look). Do those and the print succeeds.

Why is the STL bigger than my PLY?

It usually is not — but when it happens, the cause is format encoding: some PLY variants compress harder than STL's plain triangle listing. If size matters for slicing performance, decimate the mesh; that dwarfs any format-level difference.

Do I need to install software to change PLY into STL?

No. The whole conversion runs as a web page: the PLY file is parsed by your browser, rewritten to STL locally, and handed back as a download. There is no installer, no plugin and no desktop app in the loop.
