Kept

Full-resolution triangle geometry, UVs, and per-vertex color where the FBX bakes it

Lost

Rig, clips, PBR materials, texture images and hierarchy

Use for

Archiving mesh geometry from production pipelines into scan-compatible, tool-agnostic files

Using the PLY file afterwards

Open in MeshLab for measurement or decimation studies, or commit to a research/scan database that ingests PLY

FBX to PLY is the archivist's route: the animated production asset becomes flat, dense, vertex-annotated geometry — the format scan databases and research tools understand. Nothing about the pipeline survives except the surface itself, which is precisely the point: PLY output is a long-lived record of the mesh, not a working animation file.

What changes in the file

  • 1

Textures do not become vertex colors automatically — colored PLY only happens if the FBX stores vertex color data

  • 2

Expect a large file: production density plus PLY's layout without texture compression

  • 3

The scene flattens to one mesh; parented hierarchies are lost as structure and kept as position
